Carey, No. 121 Chestnut Street, 1816, 376 pp. *** A rare, early 19th. century book with accounts of travel into the interior of Brazil. This copy is from the 1st. American edition. The sub-title is as follows: Including a Voyage to the Rio De La Plata, and An Historical Sketch of the Revolution of Buenos Ayres. The author, John Mawe, was granted permission for these travels by the Prince Regent of Portugal. There is a frontis. folding engraved plate showing Negro slaves washing for diamonds under the watchful eyes of overseers. Three (3) other folding, engraved plates and a folding, engraved map of the diamond and gold region. *** This book comes with a clear mylar protective cover. *** Bound in full brown calf with gilt rule on spine, red leather spine label with gilt lettering half gone. The joints are completely cracked with front cover attached by binding strings, rear cover attached to hinge with archival cloth tape. Covers have moderate wear and soil. Spine is worn with a chipping at spine ends. The contents are complete and clean with light to moderate foxing overall. The maps and plates are in good condition.
