BETTY ZANE (signed Letter Laid in)
Charles Francis Press, 1903. First printing of the first edition of Zane Grey's first book, written while he was still a dentist, and before he dropped the "P" (for "Pearl") from "P. Zane Grey." Original gray decorated cloth. Frontispiece portrait of "Betty" and five b/w plates, by Zane Grey. 291 pages. Pages untrimmed, many somewhat roughly opened. Front endpapers slightly discolored, from clipping having been affixed (small bit remains). Hinges cracked. Front cover bit wobbly. Cloth moderately soiled. Spine titile faded. Moderate wear to corners and spine-ends and also a bit along lower cover edges. Only good, but very scarce. Affixed to half-title page is HANDWRITTEN, SIGNED LETTER from Zane Grey, on stationery imprinted with his PZG monogram and "Cottage Point/Lackawaxen Pennsylvania." Full page letter, dated "April 13," it is addressed to a Dr. Cobb, and states that he is sending a copy of "Betty Zane" to him and that he hopes to call on Dr. Cobb soon so that "we can discuss your kind interest in behalf of my present mss" ("The Spirit of the Border?"). Historically, this would be the book actually sent to Dr. Cook, with the signed letter pasted in. Letter has darker areas where paste used shows through, and the ink is slightly faded. We can furnish for your inspection Xerox copies of the cover, the letter and the title page. Returnable if not as described. . Signed by Author on Handwritten Letter. First Edition. Cloth. Good.
