Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus
Pennyroyal Press, West Hatfield, MA 1983 - West Hatfield, MA: Pennyroyal Press, 1983. Fine/fine. Barry Moser. Two volumes in slipcase, this is the limited edition of 50 copies with an extra suite of 52 engarvings (each signed by Barry Moser) and an entirely oriignal pencil sketch of the monster. The main volume is bound in tan quarter morocco over maroon cloth boards by Sam Ellenport at the Harcourt Bindery, raised bands, maroon leather label with calligraphic titling. The portfolio of engravings is in matching maroon cloth. The set is, in turn, housed in a spectacular slipcase: 1/2 morocco leather with a large solid bronze medalion of the monster's hand inset into the spine, again over maroon cloth. Condition is truly fine throughout, absolutely clean and beautiful in every way. Slipcase has perhaps just a touch of shelfwear to the bottom cloth, top-edge gilt on the textual volume has a single micro-hairline scratch. A spectacular production, easily the finest edition of Frankenstein ever printed and reportedly Barry Moser's favorite Pennyroyal. Prosepctus laid in, also fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
