1895. [BURGESS, Frank Gelett]. THE PURPLE COW. [San Francisco: William Doxey, 1895]. 8vo., printed wraps. First Edition, second state. Merle Johnson states that the first state was printed on rough China paper but, because it caused the type to break, the publisher later printed it on thinner and smoother paper- and printed the pages on one side only (as here). A Merle Johnson High Spot of America Literature. Signed presentation (in pencil) from Burgess on the front cover: "To my friend May Day, with the compliments of F.G.B." While collectable copies of this fragile pamphlet are uncommon, inscribed copies are almost unheard of and certainly scarce. Good (few edges roughly opened). $750.00.
