London: G. Bell & Sons Ltd,, 1930. Octavo. Original maroon cloth, titles gilt to spine. Folding map at the rear. Ownership inscription of John Cloake, 1977 - two ownership inscriptions prior to Cloake's, dated 1946 and 1975. Corners bumped and extremities of cloth slightly rubbed, mark to tail of spine, internally fine, an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page, with the 1977 ownership inscription of UK ambassador to Bulgaria (1976-80), John Cloake (1924-2014), and an autograph letter signed from Runciman to Cloake, on Elshieshields letterhead and dated 1984, thanking Cloake for a letter of congratulations, and remarking "it is rather awesome to think that I wrote The First Bulgarian Empire well over half a century ago. It is now somewhat out of date." This copy also bears a four page pamphlet of the May 1981 Committee of Honour for the Celebration of the 1300th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Bulgarian State, bearing a three page "Historical Note by Sir Steven Runciman FBA FSA author of the First Bulgarian Empire, a Member of the Committee of Honour." Runciman's book, which was his second published is "dedicated by gracious permission to Boris III, Tsar of the Bulgarians", whom he knew.
