Tear in the paper of back pastedown (repairable). Book-block generally in fine condition.. A reasonable copy of the first Plantin/Moretus edition of Seneca's philosophical works, being an impressive piece of masterful typography and Flemish late Renaissance book design. Brunet V,276f. Graesse VI,348.** The 1605 Seneca edition must be considered as one of the most important scholarly achievements by the stoicist humanist philosopher Justus Lipsius (1547-1606). Three later editions followed after his death, the first in 1615. The printer, Jean Moretus (1543-1609) was born in Antwerp and became the son-in-law of printer and publisher Christophe Plantin (1520-1589) in 1570. Moretus had been working for Plantin since 1557, and after his death, Jean Moretus became the owner of his renowned printer's office
