Vue des Caps du Port Jackson. Nouvelle Galles du Sud
Tatsu, Paris 1833 - Lithograph, 358 x 517 mm; in fine condition, embossed stamp below title, mounted. A fine view of the ships of the Astrolabe voyage passing through the Heads of Port Jackson by Louis de Sainson. The lithograph is from Dumont Durville's Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe. The Astrolabe sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, through Bass Straits and arrived at Sydney on December 2, 1828. The expedition found that the local authorities were disturbed by renewed French activity in Australian waters and were actively working to forestall French settlements. After a stay of only 17 days the Astrolabe sailed for New Zealand. Views, scientific data and portraits were illustrated in sumptuous folio atlases as a part of the publication which included this view, published soon after the expedition returned to Paris.
