American Prospects
New York: Times Books, 1987. Tiny bump at the spine heel, boards a tad bowed, a solid near fine copy in a near fine jacket, sunned a but at the spine as is almost always the case, with a small crimp at the spine heel.. The true First Edition, with the number line ending in 2 and the "first edition" slug present (most copies offered are later printings misidentified as firsts). Oblong quarto. SIGNED by Sternfeld and dated in the year of publication. Sternfeld's photo travelogue of America: the bleak and the beautiful. With the great dust jacket image of a fireman buying a pumpkin at a farm stand while a house burns in the background. Expanding upon Stephen Shore's Uncommon Places, Sternfeld turns seemingly banal landscapes into sublime American archetypes. Yet one gets the feeling looking at these pictures that Shore and Sternfeld's America is gone. The vast rural vistas have been replaced with exurban sprawl, Home Depot and Walmart, while the urban decay has morphed into million dollar Harlem condos with Starbucks just out of view. (Parr / Badger, v2, 35; Roth 260-261; Open Book 338-339).
