First edition of von Jannau?s most important work, in which he sharply criticized serfdom in the Baltic region. In his writing he advocated enlightened absolutism and the improvement of the lives of the serfs through gradual reforms, such as reduction of the corvée, the establishment of state supervision and guardianship over the peasants, and the expansion of the peasant school system. His book strongly influenced for instance Kotzebue and Garlieb Merkel. But, because of his views, he also came in conflict with the landowners and the German aristocracy is Livonia. Heinrich Johann von Jannau (1753-1821), was a livonian priest, historian and publicist, from an old Bohemian family. He was born in Holstres (Holtstfershof) in Livonia and studied first in Riga Cathedral School, under the leadership of Johann Gottfried Herder, and then in Göttingen, where he was influenced by the enlightenment through A. L. von Schlözer. He worked as pastor in P lva from 1776 to 1779 and in Laiuse (Lais) from 1779 to 1821. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
