An Account of an Embassy to the Kingdom of Ava in the Year 1765
[London].: [Bulmer].. [1800].. 2 folding maps, 26 folding black and white engravings, 4 folding, 3 double page, xxiii + [Errata] + 503pp + Directions to the Binder, appendices, glossary. One plate bound in upside down, some foxing and spotting on plates, offsetting from plates onto text opposite. Lacks title page and all preliminary leaves prior to the dedication. Maps browned. Large map of the Irrawaddy torn with loss along two folds. Upper corner of dedication leaf removed and repaired, little worming in the upper and lower sections of the gutter, neither fault affecting the text. A few illegible library(?) stamps on margins, several margins have been sections cut from them again without affecting the text. Bound in half leather with marbled paper covered boards. This binding was likely produced by a bindery in Burma or the Sub-continent as features rather tell-tale pink thick paper endpapers and the gilt lettering on the spine is not quite straight. There is also a little borer damage in a few small places to the leather. Boards rubbed with loss to paper at edges. Quarto. "Symes' book was the first full account of Burma to be published and it contains a mass of information on the history, religion, government, social system, language, geography and economy of Burma, together with a narrative of his seven months' stay in Burma and journey to the capital and his reception at court. In diplomatic terms Symes' mission was a success and he obtained permission to establish a British Resident at Rangoon to supervise British commercial affairs." Herbert 179. .
