In Praise of Bishop Valentine
London - For Private Circulation 1898 - The first edition of this charming collection ofpoetry in celebration of St. Valentine's Day. With an illustrated frontispiece. Extremely scarce as printed for private circulation. Only 125 copies printed and 25 copies bound in Japanese vellum. This copy is one of the25 in Vellum. Some of the poets whose work has been included are Lancelot Andrews, William Cartwright, John Gay, Thomas Macaulay and William Shakespeare alongside many poems written anonymously. No author to title page, although preface is by Frank E Bliss and this text has later been attributed to English author and poet Richard Le Galliene. The introductory essay on Bishop Valentine is written by Le Galliene. Condition: In a japanese vellum binding with gilt stamping to front board and spine. Lacking silk ties from boards. Externally, smart. Some discolouring to the vellum is evident in places. Internally, binding is tight. Pages are bright. Some offsetting from title page to tissue guard and from half title page to verso of prior endpaper. Otherwise, pages are clean. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
