LETTERS OF JANE AUSTEN. Edited with an introduction and critical remarks by Edward, Lord Brabourne
Richard Bentley & Son. London. 1884. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. 8vo.(8.1 x 5.8 inches). Portrait frontis in volume one, nearly full length. This is the first publication of this image, a photograph from an oil painting in the possession of the Rev. Morland Rice, of Bramber. The portrait was painted by Zoffany and is dismissed by Austen Scholar and bibliographer Geoffrey Keynes as being of "Doubtful authenticity". Second volume frontis is a charming wood engraving view of Godmersham House, the Artist/Engraver unknown. A very good set. Publishers dark green cloth over bevelled boards with gilt decorative initials "J A" on front boards. Spines ruled and lettered in gilt. Original light brown coated endpapers. Both volumes firm and tight in the bindings. Aside from some very minor rubbing to the extremities this is a very good bright set of this uncommon edition.
