The was array of information included in San Juan´s work is virtually unparalleled by any other Spanish work written up to that point, it contains a comprehensive description of the region with details on the geography, climate, government, history, antiquities, manners and religion of the Moors, their relation with foreigners, the first Franciscan missionaries –c.1234-, their martyrdoms and persecutions, the foundation of the convent of Morocco, amongst others subjects. Embellished with a striking engraved frontispiece by Allet after Pietri´s design, showing the Convento de la Concepcion de Marruecos, surrounded by medallion portraits of Saints, martyrs and proto-martyrs to Morocco, and Juan de Pardo kneeling with arrows in his chest and a sword in his head; the Virgin Mary at the top over an image of the.
