Head and tail of spines repaired, lower joint of second volume cracking, rubbed, marginal browning, else very good. First edition. 2 vols. 8vo. With an Autograph Letter on Stammering. WITH AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER LAID IN, signed C. Kingsley," 1 1/2 pages, 8vo, Eversley Rectory, Winchfield, Monday, n.y. to "My dear Hurst," writing of his stammering and that "I found that with a little practice I couldn't only articulate all constonants but speak common short sentences in a voice varying from one to 1 1/2 octaves above the natural.The timbre of the voice excess resembled that of the well known hoop of the hooping cough." Kingsley had a stammer that he spent much time trying to overcome. The DNB says that he could overcome it in his public speaking but not in social conversation. This was one of his popular novels.
