Frontispiece photograph with tissue guard. Illustrated title page in black and green. True first edition with signature "11" on page 161, BAL 3451. "Johnson expressed a definite preference for copies with the single (Hartford) imprint."Twain's travelogue, emphasizing India, Australia and South Africa, from a lecture tour through the British Empire from 1895-1896 with critical commentary on racism, British imperialism and religious intolerance of missionaries with a number of fictional stories which appeared in Charles Neider's (ed.) anthology "The complete Short Stories of Mark Twain" published by Doubleday in 1957. Profusely illustrated by Dan Beard, A. B. Frost, B. W. Clinedinst, Frederick Dielman, Peter Newell, F. M. Seinor, T. J. Fogarty, C. H. Warren, A. G. Reinhart, F. Berkeley Smith, and C. Allan Gilbert. Brief pencil inscription on front free endpaper "To M. B. Selby April 6"1898 from Lloyd." Some light wear along edges of binding and spine. Slightly starting at inside covers.
