Birkbeck emigrated from England and established an agricultural community in the Wabash River valley in Illinois, worked for the abolitionist cause, and was eventually appointed Secretary of State by Illinois's second governor, Edward Coles. The pro-slavery legislature rejected the appointment. Notes on a Journey Through France; William Phillips,1814. Notes on a Journey in America; James Ridgway, 1818 (2nd Edition). Letters from Illinois; Taylor and Hessey, 1818 (2nd Edition). Folding map in Notes on a Journey in America is present; Letters from Illinois lacks maps. Few names from previous owners in ink, this has been clipped out on the title page of first volume. Quarter leather over marbled boards, rubbing to edges, interior has some foxing but is overall clean, binding tight. Map from second volume is quite creased. Howes B-468, Howes B-467. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
