An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation A new Edition, corrected by the Author
London: E. Wilson and W. Pickering,, 1823. 2 volumes bound into one, octavo (211 × 127 mm). Contemporary straight grained blue morocco, covers with double-rule gilt border, rebacked, new red morocco spine labels, marbled edges. Engraved portrait frontispiece to vol. I. Engraved armorial bookplate of the English Judge Nathaniel Lindley to front pastedown. A few small scuff marks to covers. Offset from frontispiece to title, with some light spotting; a very attractive copy. Second edition, revised with a few additional notes, of Bentham's best-known and perhaps his greatest work, containing the clearest statement of his fundamental views, the principle of utility in particular, originally published in 1789. Apart from the Fragment on Government it is, as Hart notes (Bentham, p. 298), the only work of Bentham's to enter regularly into the academic teaching of political philosophy, politics and jurisprudence. Bentham was working on the Introduction - which he originally intended to call "The critical elements of jurisprudence" - as early as 1776. He intended it as a preparation and a plan for a number of further treatises; the Tactique des assemblées législatives (1816) corresponds to one section of the scheme. The title exists in two variant states, putting either Pickering or Wilson first in the imprint. There is no precedence.
