New York: Simon and Schuster, 1940.. 1940.. Good. - Octavo, red cloth with a gilt-printed white title label between gilt rules on the spine and with the author's monograph in gilt on the front cover, in an illustrated creamy white dust wrapper. The head and tail of the book's spine are lightly bumped and the title label is rumpled. There are a couple of light indentations to the covers. The soiled dust jacket is chipped and torn along the edges with a small piece out of the jacket's spine. The author's name on the spine is quite faded. [iv], 527 & [1] pages. Very good in a good dust wrapper. First edition. From the pen of Australian author Christina Stead, "The Man Who Loved Children" is the story of a highly dysfunctional family. Originally set in Sydney, the setting was changed to Washington, D.C. to appeal to an American audience, though linguistic differences attest to its roots. Acclaimed by Robert Stone, Jonathan Franzen, Angela Carter and Randall Jarrell, the novel was included in Time Magazine's "TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005". In his introduction to a later edition of the book, Randall Jarrell wrote that "no other novel makes so scrupulous, so passionate, and so convincing a study of a family -- and with such generalizing force that one immediately expands that to THE family." Jonathan Franzen, writing in the New York Times speaks of it thus: "Even the word 'enjoying': is that the right word? Although its prose ranges from good to fabulously food - is lyrical in the true sense, every observation and description bursting with feeling, meaning, subjectivity -- and although its plotting is unobtrusively masterly, the book operates at a pitch of psychological violence that makes 'Revolutionary Road' look like 'Everybody Loves Raymond.' And, worse yet, can never stop laughing at that violence!". Rare in the dust wrapper.
