John Murray, 1867, Full-Leather, Book Condition: Very Good Plus, Second Edition Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, Complete in three volumes. Stated second edition. Printed by William Clowes and Sons. Later full-leather bindings, by Root & Son, (binder's stamp to front free-endpapers), in green polished calf, with crisp gilt-stamped rules and corner devices to the boards and with gilt-stamped design to the hubbed spines, each spine with two cordovan morocco labels. Gilt dentilles to the under-edges of the boards. Some rubbing to the hubs of the spines. Unbumped spine heads and tails. Sharp corners with a touch of rubbing. Some light scuffing to the boards but on the whole very clean and presentable bindings. Hinges strong. Text blocks firmly bound in. 8.75 x 5.5 inches. T.E.G. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. xxxix, 564, xxviii, 620, xxiii and 602 numbered pages. With copious footnotes. No illustrations. Green ribbon page markers. Light foxing to the rear FEPs of Vol. III, else no foxing or other significant demerits observed. To a rear FEP in each volume, tiny sticker of previous bookseller. Else clean. Very Good Plus copies. Scarce in any condition. The binding is identical to our listing for the following: Aristotle (2 vols.); History of Greece (12 vols.); The Personal Life of George Grote (1 vol.).
