Contemporary full black straight grain morocco, raised bands, gilt decorations in compartments, gilt inner dentelles, gilt decorated borders to both covers, all edges gilt, original pink endpapers. . Some very light foxing. Surface rubbng of joints and corners but a very good tight set superbly printed, classically illustrated and elegantly bound. . Two volumes. Roy 8vo. pp. title page, 246 ; title page, 276. 15 plates engraved on copper including both frontispieces (3 are by Bartolozzi and 9 by Fittler). Armorial bookplates in each volume and signature on each bookplate and on each fly leaf. Dibdin (2nd ed.) p.447 says ”This elegant edition, which is certainly the most beautiful octavo publication of the poet extant ...the text is supposed to be faultless. The typography is a masterpiece of Bensley press. It uses the Didot text. ESTC T138814
