INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the half-title page, for a charity auction: "For the LASFS auction -- / This tale about weird / events in Northeastern / California.As we all / know -- in real life, most / of the really good weirdness / is in the southern part / of the state. Set in fictional Snowfield, California, formerly "a charming little town," now "a place of nightmares," as hundreds of the town's residents have completely disappeared, "and the worst is yet to come." (LASFS, by the way, is the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society, claimed to be the oldest continuously operating science fiction society in the world; it was an 1939 offshoot of the Science Fiction League, founded in 1934 by pulp-magazine publisher Hugo Gernsback.)
