(title), 3-32 pp. Ballet scenario with named cast lists, text by Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), music by Lalande, choreography by Jean Balon (1676-1739). Authors named on verso of title. Decorative woodcut vignette to title featuring the arms of France signed "I.P." [I. Papillon] to title, numerous decorative woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials throughout. From the collection of André Meyer. Signatures mostly detached; corners slightly turned; minor creasing, soiling, and wear; light dampstaining at inner margins; slightly wormed at lower and inner margins just affecting one letter of title; final leaf with somewhat heavier soiling, slight loss to lower corner and remnants of blank former endpaper to inner margin. . First Edition. Quite rare. Worldcat (4 copies only, 2 in France and 2 in Great Britain). Collection Musicale André Meyer, p. 86. Not in Sonneck or RISM. Les Folies de Cardénio was first performed in Paris on December 30, 1720. Harpsichordist and organist Michel-Richard Lalande was "the leading composer of the high Baroque grand motet at the French court." He also wrote "some 24 ballets, divertissements, intermèdes and pastorales to entertain royalty at Versailles, Marly, Fontainebleau and Sceaux, and occasionally in Paris, including those for Louis XV."
