[4], iv, 566 pp. Full bound in early speckled calf with title label; spine is darkened and desiccated but has been stabilized; front board has been discreetly reattached; very occasional pencil bracketing in the margins; a few instances of contemporary ink underlining; evidence of a removed bookplate on the front pastedown. A Good or better copy of a scarce and important work. Historian John Fiske calls it, ?"One of the most admirable histories ever written by an American?" (Essays). In his catalog of books relating to early American history, E. D. Church says of Hutchinson's work, ?"[it] will always stand as of the highest authority.?" This is the first volume of the first history of the Massachusetts-Bay Colony. The continuation was published in 1767; and the conclusion was published posthumously in the early 19th century.
