Autograph letter incorporating a musical quotation signed "Dr. Richard Strauss" to Irving Seery (fourth and last husband of Maria Jeritza)
[?Pontresina, Switzerland]. [?early August 1948]. One page. Written in ink to verso of photographic waist-length postcard portrait of Richard Strauss and his grandson Christian Strauss (b. 1932); handstamp of Photohaus C. Mangholz, St. Gall, Switzerland (147 x 102 mm including margins). In German (with translation). Strauss confirms that he is looking forward to the visit of Seery and his "Marie-andl" (i.e., Maria Jeritza) and announces that on the day of his visit his daughter-in- law Alice and grandson Christian will be present as well: "We will stay here until August 28 and are very much looking forward to welcoming you... here again on the 17th, where you will also meet Alice and the grandson overleaf." With musical quotation to foot of letter consisting of the first three measures of the vocal part of Strauss's famous song "Morgen!" (op. 27, no. 4; 1894) with a humorous addition to the text: "Und morgen wird die Sonne—hoffentlich—wieder scheinen" (And tomorrow the sun will—hopefully—shine again). The photograph was most probably taken in front of the boarding school on the Rosenberg in St. Gall, which Christian attended at the time. Captions in Richard Strauss's hand, "Richard" and "Christian Strauss." No date. From the collection of Maria Jeritza. Two small creases, otherwise in very good condition. . An interesting document from the final years of Strauss's life. According to the information given in Trenner's Richard Strauss Chronik on the travels of Strauss and the members of his family, the photograph was most probably taken on June 28, 1948, and the letter written in Pontresina, in the canton of Graubünden, in early August 1948; the "17th" in the letter would thus refer to August 17, 1948, when both Alice and Christian were in Pontresina. Irving Seery (1890-1966), a businessman from New Jersey, was the fourth and last husband of the celebrated soprano Maria Jeritza (1887-1982), who had been a close friend of Richard Strauss for many years. Seery and Jeritza married in 1948, apparently shortly before their visit to Pontresina. Strauss was busy composing his Four Last Songs at the time; ?"September,?" which is chronologically the last of the four songs, is dedicated to ?"Mr. & Mme. Seery.?"
