Remarques sur la Pragmatique faite par l'Eglise de France assemblee a Bourges en 1438, et confirmee par le Roy Charles VII le septieme juillet de la meme annee.
No place or date, 18th century.. Small folio (206 × 275 mm). 396 ff. French ms. on paper. French 18th-century half sheepskin, gilt. All edges red.. Interesting manuscript about the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges, a decree issued in 1438 and still regarded as the founding document of Gallicanism. It asserted the supremacy of a council over the pope and established the "liberties" of the Gallican Church, restricting the rights of the pope and in many cases making his jurisdiction subject to the will of the king. Revoked by Louis XI in 1461 but reasserted from time to time, the Pragmatic Sanction was ultimately superseded by the Concordat of Bologna, negotiated by Francis I and Pope Leo X in 1516. The present manuscript demonstrates the ongoing discussion of and recourse taken to the "Pragmatique Sanction" until well into the 18th century. Domus studiorum." The Redemptorists (Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer) were a missionary society, founded in 1732 by Saint Alphonsus Maria Liguori, near Amalfi, and which spread rapidly first around Naples, then in Italy and France. On all their missions, the Redemptorists were expected to preach a sermon on prayer and one on the intercession of the Blessed Virgin.
