The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. By Edward Gibbon, Esq. with notes by the Rev. H. H. Milman
Philadelphia: Claxton, Remsen and Haffelfinger 1880, 1880. Six volumes. Crown octavo. With portrait frontispiece. Handsomely bound in half dark blue calf, gilt, with raised bands to spine, marbled sides, edges and endpapers. Some minor rubbing otherwise a crisp, clean set in an attractive leather binding. Originally published between 1776 and 1788, this ground-breaking work has been read by historians of Rome and Byzantium ever since. Although Gibbon's pessimistic attitude is currently unfashionable amongst scholars of Late Antiquity, the breadth of his coverage and the depth of his knowlegde remains unrivaled.
