Le Yacht. Historie de la Navigation Maritime de Plaisance
Libraires-Imprimeries Reunies, no date but, Paris 1890 - Quarto, engraved title in colour, many steel engravings and photographic engravings throughout; in original pictorial cloth boards, all edges gilt, some wear to spine, a very good copy. An attractive copy of this richly illustrated guide to yachting, in the original printed colour boards.Paschal Grousset, born 1844 in Corsica, was a journalist, politician and author in many fields, most notably Science Fiction. Grousset had many pseudonyms, including Philippe Daryl (as here), Léopold Virey and Andre Laurie; he is best known for his collaboration with Jules Verne while working under the name Laurie. Le Yacht is one of the twenty or more works Grousset wrote under the name of Philippe Daryl, all of them non-fiction and most relating to travel and sporting. The illustrations in Le Yacht are very charming, and Grousset's discussion takes in every aspect of yachting, from building and racing, through to fashion and interior decorating, nautical clubs and routes, marking the work as a significant snapshot of the sport at the end of the nineteenth century.Grousset's political life was also interesting. His writing for the newspaper La Marseillaise had a pro-revolutionary focus and provoked Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte, deputy of Corsica and cousin of Napoleon III, to challenge him to a dual in 1870. Grousset's second, Victor Noir was killed in the dual and is buried in Père Lachaise. Grousset was later exiled in 1872 for his involvement in the Paris Commune, one of a reported 7,000 who were banished to New Caledonia. Two years later he travelled to Australia, then sought refuge in England, before returning to France during the Amnesty of 1880.The book is illustrated by various artists including L. Vallet.
