Amsterdam: F. Kaal, no date, circa 1815. 2 volumes (vol. 1 - 6, 110p., vol. 2 117.), oblong 5 1/4" x 4 3/4", printed boards, slight toning and light soil to boards otherwise in remarkable condition in custom cloth clamshell box. Comenius's 1658 Orbis Sensualium Pictus or the Visible World is considered the first printed picture book for children, the aim of which was to give children a broad look at the world around them. It was immediately popular and the concept was used by other educators in various countries over the years. This 2 volume set is a Dutch edition of Heinrich Seidel's German Neuer Orbis Pictus. Complete with 19 fine hand colored plates, each plate features several objects with captions in Dutch, English, French and German. Well printed and free from of any foxing, this is a beautiful example of early moral-free education for children. (OCLC locates only 5 copies, all in Holland.
