Dissertations moral and critical. On memory and imagination. On dreaming. The theory of language. On fable and romance. On the attachments of kindred. Illustrations on sublimity
London: W. Strahan; and T. Cadell; and W. Creech at Edinburgh. 1783. 4to., x + (16) + 655 + (1)pp., including the half title, intermittent very minor foxing, contemporary tree calf gilt, neatly rebacked to match retaining original label. A very good copy indeed with the late 19th century armorial bookplate of the Oldhams* of Doverdale> in Worcestershire (probably that of the Rev. James Oldham who died in 1892). First edition. Jessop p.99. Chuo III, 28. Alston III, 357. James Beattie (1736-1803), poet and professor of moral philosophy and logic at the University of Aberdeen, although not of the same calibre as David Hume, nonetheless, made several significant contributions to the Scottish enlightenment and the intellectual life of Scotland in the late 18th century. In the view of his recent biographer (Roger J. Robinson in ODNB), the Dissertations> was Beattie's 'best prose work'. The book covers 'various philosophical and literary topics, and has an extended treatise entitled The Theory of Language>. In any case, the book met with the most enthusiastic praise from William Cowper the poet, who declared, in a letter to William Hayley that Beattie was the only author he had seen 'whose critical and philosophical researches are diversified and embellished by a poetical imagination that makes even the driest subject and the leanest a feast for epicures'. [DNB/Chuo]. * Doverdale is a small parish a few miles north-west of Droitwich. The advowson of the parish church had passed before 1849 to the Oldham family. In 1892, the Rev. James Oldham left £300 in his will, the interest to be applied towards the repair of the fabric of the church, and of the fences and gates of the churchyard.
