On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life
John Murray, 1860. ix, 502, 32, folding table. 8vo. HB. Orig. publisher's green cloth, gilt title to spine (a trifle dull), blind stamped decoration to boards, rebacked and recased, preserving original end-papers. Contemporary book plate. A few pencil underlinings and marginal annotations to Introduction and occasionally elsewhere. Housed in a solander box, with title to front cover. Very good copy. 2nd edition, 2nd issue, fifth thousand. 3,000 copies of this edition were printed in January 1860 following high demand for the 1st edition (of 1,250 copies) which appeared in November 1859 and sold out on publication. Darwin wrote 'The new edition is only a reprint, yet I have made a few important corrections'. In the usual form in which it is found, it is recognised by the date (1860), the words 'fifth thousand' and the corrected spelling of 'Linnean' on the title page. There are only a few known copies of the 1st issue of the 2nd edition, dated 1859. Pp. i-ix, [1], 502, 32 (publisher's ads dated Jan 1860), folding table. [Freeman, 376, binding variant a]..
