Dublin: George Herbert 1875 - FIRST EDITION, some handling marks, dustsoiling, and one or two faint spots to borders, creasing to corners of a few leaves, 3 (of 5) Woodburytype plates (one loose and one with a short closed tear at leading edge), notes to end blank regarding plates, pp. iv, 764, 8vo, contemporary Tasmanian half brown calf, some rubbing to boards, wear to corners and backstrip with some crude repair to latter, edges sprinkled red with a little rubbing and fading, Hobart circulating library label to front pastedown, hinges strained and endpapers a little grubby, sound ‘The earliest known of Wilde’s published writings’ (Mason), a translation of Aristophanes signed Oscar O’F. Wills Wilde, Magdalen College. A manuscript note on the rear fly-leaf refers to the Woodburytypes as the object of interest in the volume, and records it purchase in Dunedin, c. 1950. The Circulating Library label is of W. Westcott, Hobart Town (nowadays Hobart), Tasmania. The binding is rather crude, and may be Tasmanian work. (Mason 39)
