J'ai Tue
1918. LÉGER, Fernand. J'ai Tué. By Blaise Cendrars. [18] ff. Illustrated with 5 original woodcuts coloured by stencil in red and blue by Léger. Square 8vo., 183 x 175 mm, bound in original illustrated wrappers with glassine cover, in a linen covered chemise and slipcase. Paris: La Belle Edition, 8 Novembre 1918. Léger's first illustrated book, published one year before his celebrated La Fin du Monde, whose text was also written by Cendrars. The use of red ink for the text and blue ink for three of the cubist illustrations make for a visually striking illustrated book. This copy was inscribed by Cendrars to Paul Lombard, editor of the Surrealist magazine La Rue, inscription dated December 1918, and subsequently inscribed again by Cendrars to Jacques Lecat, dated 7 July 1951. Copy number 124 of 300 on forme paper, of a total edition of 353 printed by François Bernouard. Andel, Avant-Garde Page Design, p. 96 and figs. 94-95. Stein, Cubist Prints/Cubist Books 62.
