A Map of Honolulu and the Sandwich Islands which we now call the Hawaiian Islands
New York.: Henry M. Snyder.. 1927.. Color pictorial map poster, 27 1/8 x 35 3/8 on sheet 28 3/8 x 36 1/2 inches, early linen backing. Tackhole in each corner and to the middle of each edge, overall toning, scattered foxing, some creases from rolling. A pictographic bird's eye view style street map of Honolulu is surrounded by a border of pictures relating to the history, customs, natural history and scenery of the islands. Decorative cartouche at upper left reads, "In this map you will find depicted in Pictorial Fashion the history, land-marks & customs of these colorful Isles." There is an inset map (9 x 11 3/4 inches) showing the Hawaiian Islands, and small inset images of the Palace Square and Schofield Barracks. This beautiful map was designed by Alexander Samuel MacLeod (1888-1956) who worked in the art departments of various Hawaii magazines and newspapers when he arrived in Hawaii in the 1920s; he also pursued a career as a painter and lithographer. A stunning design packed with interesting information and attractive images. One of the late 1920s decorative maps with a clear debt to the work of MacDonald Gill. This map is more commonly seen folded; this copy was apparently issued flat. .
