Saibi. [Beautiful colour]. Salesman sample catalogue of late Meiji-period decorative silks for kimonos
1898. JAPANESE SILK TEXTILES. Saibi [Beautiful Colour]. Salesman's sample catalogue of late Meiji-period decorative silks for kimonos. [50] ff. and 400 woven & painted colour silk samples tipped-in on thick stock in assorted sizes. Oblong 4to., bound in contemporary gray boards, Japanese punch-sewn at spine, leather corners, with calligraphic kanji title in black on front cover. Japan, [ca. 1900]. |~||~||~||~| A stunning sample catalogue for painted and woven silk patterns for Japanese kimonos during the late Meiji period, dating indicated by style of binding, and types of textile samples probably between 1890 and 1900. The samples themselves are not cut into uniform shapes or sizes, but appear to have been remnants from the cutting floor, as was typical of factory and salesman's textile sample catalogues in the West during the late Victorian era. Some of the samples are evidence of the Katagami Kimono textile stencil art, in which the patterns have been created by rice paste pressed through heavy oiled stencils onto the silk, and then immersed in the dye; many of these are the darker coloured patterns typical for summer yukata kimonos. Other of the samples illustrate an almost Ukiyo-e quality, probably created through Yuzen resist dying, while others show a batik process. The patterns include pictorial scenes, floral patterns, and many traditional Japanese motifs, as well as a large number of geometric-inspired patterns. A vibrant, splendid reference for the stunning quality of Japanese silk fabrics at the end of the 19th century.
