Boston: James Munroe and Company,, 1836. Tall duodecimo (190 x 115 mm). Original dark brown embossed cloth, decorative frame to boards in blind, titles to front board gilt. Housed in a cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Bookplate of Robert Hoe to front pastedown. Extremities a touch rubbed, corners slightly worn, spine ends chipped, light foxing throughout. A very good copy. First edition. With an autograph letter signed by the author to his publisher, tipped in at front pastedown, in which Emerson apologises for not yet having sent Munroe the manuscript as well as discussing his preferences for the finished book: "I was quite unexpectedly prevented from sending the manuscript yesterday morning. Print it on good paper, as good, I think, as Mr. Ripley's sermon which you showed me, though with smaller type".
