West Point Class of 1899 "First Class Camp" Photographic album
1899.. Hardcover. General Stuart Heintzelman (1876 - 1935), West Point Class of 1899, served with the 4th Cavalry in the Philippines, and later as part of the international force suppressing the Boxer Rebellion in China.After service in the Philippines, Heintzelman returned to Fort Leavenworth as an instructor; he later taught at Princeton as Professor of Military Art and Science. The general was awarded Commander of the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre with palm (France), the Commander of the Order of the Crown (Italian), and the Distinguished Service Medal. The USS General Stuart Heintzelman (AP-159), was named in his honor and launched in 1945. The album includes 96 photographs all taken at the military academy and captioned, including: the cavalry drill grounds; Fort Clinton; "A" Company; Battery Knox; Highland Falls N Cranston's); Trophy Point; corps passing in review; Cadet Barracks; and numerous portraits of other cadets in the class of 1899. Other photos: "Miss Barlow and Kathleen Wilson, Cranstons, Highland Falls, NY"; "Picnic at Battery Knox" of cadettes and lady guests; "Tommy's Second Picnic" with guests: G. Lee, SD Eubich '99, Miss Ennis, Heidle '99, T. Jewell '99, J. Harris '99, Miss Culand; "Mrs. Cassatt", Corporal Ennis in uniform. Oblong 8vo album. 96 photographs with hand lettered captions in pen. Gray silver gilt binding, with the title "Photographs" at front board. Some of the photographs a bit faded; the binding a bit rubbed, and the inner hinge starting.
