The History, Antiquities, and Topography of the County of Sussex
Lewes: Baxter, 1835.. First edition. Two volumes expanded to three. 4to. Later nineteenth century half dark green morocco over matching cloth boards, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panels, marbled endpapers, the bookplates of Edward Huth of Wykehurst Place to the front pastedowns. Complete with the standard collation of 2 folding maps, 56 copperplate engravings and 80 wood engravings in the text. The set profusely extra illustrated with 336 18th and 19th century engravings and lithographs comprising 301 black and white full page plates, 5 in colour, 14 double page plates including 8 views by Buck, 4 large folding plates including three of country seats and gardens by Kip, 5 folding maps and plans plus 10 full page and 1 double page and finally 1 original pencil drawing of a church in St. Leonard's. Just a small amount of trivial wear, a lovely set. One of the standard works on the county, covering each hundred and parish and listing the various ancient manor houses, churches and ruins as well as biographies of important figures, here considerably expanded to accommodate the numerous extra illustrations. The set has an impressive Huth provenance - Henry Huth amassed one of the great book collections of any age, later sold at Sotheby's over a number of sales in the early 20th century; his son Edward was also a keen bibliophile and put together a fine collection of books relating to the county.
