Narrative of a Four Month?s Residence among the Natives of a Valley of the Marquesas Islands; Or, a Peep at Polynesian Life
8vo. London: John Murray, 1846. 8vo, xvi, (2, map), 285, 16 pp. Original blindstamped red cloth with gilt-lettered backstrip, bookplate, boards a little bumped and soiled, backstrip and joints repaired, a very good copy. First edition of Melville?s first book, first issue in cloth, binder?s variant A with ?Pomarea? p. 19, line 1, and terminal catalogue dated March 1847. Melville?s embellished account of his own experience as ship?s deserter among the Typees of Marquesas Islands, whom he portrayed as sexually liberated cannibals to popular success and not a little scandal. After the Harper Brothers refused the manuscript, thinking it a hoax, Melville?s brother in London succeeded in selling it to John Murray, and later, through the intervention of Washington Irving, to G. P. Putnam for American publication by Wiley & Putnam. The book appeared in London in February 1846 in wrappers and in cloth as part of Murray?s Home and Colonial Library series. It appeared in New York in March, after hasty some censoring of some of the sexual passages by John Wiley, as Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life. BAL 13652.
