(Forbes) Bird left Britain in 1872, going first to Australia, which she disliked, then on to Hawaii (then known in Europe as the Sandwich Islands). In these 31 letters to her sister at home, Bird describes the volcanic wonders of Kilauea, sugar plantations, sheep ranches, exotic ferns,and surfing (one of the earliest accounts extant) on boards shaped like coffin lids, sculpted from the breadfruit tree.
