Original red cloth, gilt titles and black pictorial block to spine, block of soldier on a horse in black to front board and in blind to rear between decorative black rules, yellow surface-paper endpapers. Contemporary gift- and ownership inscriptions to front pastedown and endpaper. Spine sunned and rolled, extremities rubbed, sides marked. A good copy in a slightly fatigued binding. First edition of this "reasonably balanced, contemporary account" of the Mahdist rebellion (Haugh), written while the religious leader was still "undisturbed at Khartoum" (p. 275) — he died of typhus in June 1885.
