Thoughts in a Garden
England? 1909. An exceptional manuscript by Phoebe Rennell in fine original condition painted in December, 1909. Rennell's illumination of the poet Andrew Marvell's work 'Thoughts in a Garden' shows her as a fine calligrapher and illustrator. Rennell has arranged the poem on six sheets of superior vellum-textured paper with a gilt title and a superb opening section, beautifully ornamented with a watercolour border of flowers and fruits and intertwined by a blue ribbon. The work is bound in vellum-covered boards and held by a silk ribbon. With its connection to nature and individuality, Rennell's illumination epitomises the style of the Arts and Crafts movement. This delicate illumination by Phoebe Rennell shows the qualities prized by the group of craftsmen and artists working in the tradition of William Morris and Walter Crane. Rennell has been identified by distinguished calligrapher, Heather Child, as a potential student of the great Edward Johnston or Graily Hewitt. Original illuminated manuscript, vellum boards, silk ties, 110x170mm, fine.
