New York: Doubleday Page & Co., 1905. First Edition . Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Keller, Arthur I.. First Printing 1905. This copy is from the collection of M.B. Goldstone, with his custom gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown--along with his signature in pencil to the front free endpaper. Goldstone, along with his brother--who was Steinbeck's bibliographer--were both well known book collector's. M. B. Goldstone's personal copy of Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" recently sold at Bonham's and Butterfields in New York for $180,000. This copy is part of the same collection--auctioned at B & B's in San Francisco 8/09. Red Cloth with white border and lettering to front board and spine along with the decorative cross to the spine. Printed at the same time as the Presentation copies--which were gilt lettered and signed by Dixon. This copy is Near Fine. A bright and tight copy with only minor age toning. Tissue guard still protects frontispiece. Many other illustrations throughout by Keller. 374 pp. along with two pages at the rear covering two other books by Dixon. Presentation copy did not have the advertisements. A most collectable and desirable copy of this famous book. Advertised as a "Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan" with a note to the reader regarding Dixon's plan to publish 3 books concerning race conflict. The first of these books was "The Leopard's Spots". Dixon tries to clarify the reasoning behind the trilogy explaining a double love story involving revenge in the "darkest hour of the life of the South".
