Anecdotes, Personal Traits and Characteristic Sketches of VICTORIA THE FIRST from her birth and brought down to the period of her Majesty's Marriage with His Royal Highness Prince Albert of Saxe-Gotha
London Willian Bennett Simpkin and Marshall and all other Booksellers 1840 - Leather bound antiquarian book: the title continues 'An Historical Account of all those events so closely connected whith the House of Brunswick, and a Biographical Sketch of that Illustrious Prince.' Contemporary leather binding with some wear to the background, 8.5 x 5.0 x 1.5 inches approx., corners a little rubbed and bowed, gilt title 'Memoir of Victoria' to spine against a red background, gilt decoration to spine and boards visible but faded, hardback, nice to handle and good to look at, slight weakness to front hinge, generally sound and firm, no inscriptions, some water staining to preliminaries, including the title page, frontispiece is an engraving of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, a rather lovely enigmatic portrait, there is browning and staining to the preliminaries but the main body of the book is in very good condition, 800 pages, text clean and clear, fully readable, the font is mainly of a good and easy reading size. Illustrated with black and white engravings, portrait frontispiece, vignette to title page and 7 other engravings, these engravings are delightful but some of the surrounds do have evidence of browning and staining associated with age, all edge marbled but soiled over time. We have come to expect Royal exposés in our modern media but this book is from a time when the Royal Family enjoyed far greater privacy. The fascination of having a young Queen was something very new and exciting in 1840 and this book caters for a public who wanted to know more about her early life, her character and her marriage. The author is not named, she is known only as A Lady. The book is written in an informal way and allows the reader to feel that the knowledge being given is very intimate and personal. It is rather like the disclosures that have been made by servants of the Royal Family in recent years but without the scandalous detail. A book to treasure - perfect for anyone who is interested in famous women and the history of Victorian times. A heavy book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
