Cat. Nijhoff, Ned. Gesch. IV, 152; Scheepers I, 178 (this copy). Rare first edition of the memoirs in verse of a Dutch military commander, written in the form of an epic poem, with references to dates and places in the margins, covering the years 1654 to 1712.Coenraad Droste (1642-1734), took part in two sea-battles, one of them the famous sailing into the Thames by Michiel de Ruyter and his victory at Chatham, and he also gives an account in his poem of the diplomatic voyages he made to France and Great Britain. But Droste's poem-diary is especially important for its picturing the daily life of patrician families in the Dutch Republic in the second half of the 17th century.Binding slightly stained. Good copy of the rare first edition, from the library of J.F.M. Scheepers.
