With additional chapters furnished by the author, for this first English and American edition, on paper money, international slave trade, and the protective system; and a preliminary essay on the historical in poliical eceonmy. (From the French by L. Wolowski, the whole translated by John J. Lalor. 2 volumes, octavo (225 × 145 mm). Contemporary tan half calf, flat bands to spines forming compartments, twin red and black letterpieces to second and fourth, remaining compartments with floral design gilt, comb-marbled sides, edges and endpapers. Slightly rubbed, small nick to head of vol. I front joint. A very good copy. Second Chicago edition; originally published in New York and Chicago in 1878. "The importance of Roscher lies rather in the field of method than in dogma. He is sometimes considered as the founder in Germany of the historical method in political economy. This cannot be admitted without reservation … But in one respect Roscher stands out far above all his successors. While these almost exclusively go to historical sources, and, broadly speaking, neglect the economic literature of the past, Roscher's principal strength is shown in the opposite direction. He did not fall into the neglect of the older systems, especially of classical political economy so strikingly prominent among later writers" (Palgrave).
