Catalogue d'une Collection d'Editions Elzeviriennes et d'autres bons livres dépendans de la Bibliothèque de M. A.-A. R., dont la vente se fera…26 janvier 1829, et jours suivans…
viii, 332 (i.e. 132) pp. 8vo, attractive antique half-calf & marbled boards, flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: J.S. Merlin, 1829. The very uncommon sale catalogue of Renouard's great collection of more than 200 Elzeviers, formed over a fifty year period. To this collection, Renouard has added about another 11100 titles (1397 lots in total) from his personal collection. In his preface, Renouard stresses that his Elzeviers were in the finest possible condition with many being in original state ("virginal") with uncut edges. Renouard (1765-1853), originally a manufacturer and involved in late revolutionary politics, became a collector, publisher, and bookseller. He achieved bibliographic immortality through his bibliographies of the Aldine and Estienne presses, indispensable to the present day. Renouard was one of the two or three most important French booksellers in the first half of the 19th century. Fine copy.
