THE STUDENT: A SERIES OF PAPERS, by the Author of "Eugene Aram," "England and the English," &c. &c. ..
London: Saunders and Otley, Conduit Street, 1835.. 12mo, two volumes: pp. [iii-vii] viii-xi [xii-xiv] [1-3] 4-335 [336: blank]; [iii-v] vi-viii [1-3] 4-361 [362: blank] [363-364: ads], lacks the half title leaves and R2 , the advertising leaf in volume two, contemporary brown three-quarter leather and marbled boards, spine panels tooled in gold, black leather title and number pieces, gray endpapers. First UK and first expanded edition. A miscellany of essays and fiction, including two important pieces of occult fiction: "Monos and Daimonos" and "The Tale of Kosem Kesamim, the Magician," which Wolff notes is "Bulwer's earliest piece of occult fiction and important as a forerunner of ZANONI ..." (Wolff 961b). Both stories display that semi-allegorical style that recurs in much of his occult fiction. Another story, "The Choice of Phylias," is also supernatural. Bleiler states that "Manuscript Found in a Madhouse" is included in this collection, but it is definitely not present in this edition. The story did appear in an earlier American edition, CONVERSATIONS WITH AN AMBITIOUS STUDENT IN ILL HEALTH: WITH OTHER PIECES (New-York: Printed and Published by J. & J. Harper, 1832), which presented some but not all of the material in this present edition. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 302. Block, The English Novel 1740-1850, p. 147. Sadleir 445. Wolff 961a. Owner's signature dated 1872 on the front paste-downs. Leather worn, boards rubbed, scattered foxing to text, a very good copy. (#148335)
