The Ring and the Book
Smith, Elder and Co., London 1869 - The Ring and The Book by Robert Browning. Published by Smith, Elder and Co. in 1869. A first edition. Four volumes measuring 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches. Page number: 980 in total. Bound in mid-blue calf skin with brown spines elaborately decorated with red and gilt. The numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4, the title of the poem, and that part of the epic that is within each volume is written in gilded letters between five raised bands. The end blocks are gilded and the end papers decorated with ornamental paper. The Ring and The Book has been described as 'The opus magnum of our generation' and served to secure Browning's reputation as a literary figure. Set in 1698 it dramatizes the trial of Count Guido Franceschini who, convinced of his wife's infidelity was thought to have arranged her murder. Epic in scale it reflects on the timeless theme that is the tension between passion and reason in the affairs of the human heart. Condition: This elegant set of books remains tightly bound with hinges intact and no evidence of foxing. The pages are unmarked and un-thumbed. The boards show general wear to the corners and edges of the spine and book 1 is missing the red at the base of the spine where 'London' is written. The name of a previous owner is written in ink on the end paper of the third book; also p.18, p.19, p.20 and p.21 has been neatly written in ink on these first pages. The gilded end blocks remains bright. An elegant set of books in an unusual binding. some additional postage will be required. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
