The Foundations of Mathematics, and other Logical Essays.
London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co., 1931.. FIRST EDITION, Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin's copy. Octavo, pp.[2] xviii, 292 [20]. With black ink ownership inscription of Nobel Prize-winner A. L. Hodgkin, Trinity College, Cambridge, to front free endpaper. In publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine, with gilt armorial stamp of Trinity College to upper board. Very good indeed. A collection of published and unpublished mathematical papers, published shortly after the young economist/mathematician/philosopher's tragic early death. Purchased by Hodgkin (1914-1998) while studying at Cambridge, he seems to have encountered this book at a formative stage in his education, which soon led him towards advanced research in physiology. Having been interupted by the Second World War, he was eventually honoured with the 1963 Nobel Prize for Medicine, awarded jointly to Andrew Huxley and John Eccles as well as Hodgkin, for their ground-breaking work on synapses.
