Untitled lithograph of the dirigible SPIESS-ZODIAC flying over Paris
Paris.: Mabileau & Co.. Copyright 1914.. Color lithograph, image approximately 12 x 32 inches on sheet 17 1/2 x 35 1/2 inches. Long mended circular tear to the middle of the upper margin and entering the print area by 1/4 inch - this has been repaired with tape in a rather amateur fashion, but there is no staining. Toning to lower margin and edges from previous matting, small area of paper loss and discoloration to upper right edge (well outside image area), scattered light spotting, including one 1/4 inch spot over the dome of Sacre Coeur. A striking image of a long, sleek dirigible flying low over Paris with the church of Sacre Coeur and Montmartre in the foreground and the Eiffel Tower in the distance. 'Gamy' is thought to be a pseudonym of Marguerite Montaut, the wife of the French poster artist Ernest Montaut, who died in 1909 at the age of 31. Ernest Montaut and, after his death, his wife, produced posters whose subject matter reflects the era's fascination with speed, on land and in the air. .
